Ted Monica has been an innovator in protective equipment design and manufacturing for nearly three decades. His illustrious sports industry career began in the spring of 1983, when he was hired as an Assistant Equipment Manager for the New York Giants. Later that fall he became the Head Equipment Coordinator for the fledgling United States Football League’s Jacksonville Bulls.
In 1985—when the USFL folded—Monica switched gears. He joined First Coast Athletics, a small Florida-based reconditioning company, where he reconditioned and developed protective football gear.
Two years later Monica became general manager and product designer for United Sports Laboratories, where he created customized equipment for college and pro athletes and led the design team which developed the ever popular Power Shoulder Pad product line.
When United Sports Laboratories was purchased in 1988 by Riddell, Monica signed on as general manager of the Power Protective Division. Over the next fourteen years pads he designed were used by nearly every professional team and hundreds of top college programs. While at Riddell Monica also designed the Ultra Power shoulder pad and re-vamped the company’s entire shoulder pad product line, which became the best selling line of football shoulder pads in the world.
In January 2003, Monica left Riddell to start his own firm—Impact Protective Equipment—where, as head designer, he developed many unique protective features still used in the game today.
After Impact Protective Equipment closed down in 2010, Monica joined the Hartford Colonials of the United Football League for a brief stint as Head Equipment Manager.
Monica returned to the protective equipment industry full-time in June 2012, when he joined XTECH Protective Equipment and helped launch the XTECH shoulder pad. He is a preeminent expert in the protective equipment field, and a sought after consultant—both domestically and internationally—on subjects ranging from protective gear manufacturing and industry growth and evolution, to safety issues and gear customization at all levels of play, from pewees to pros.
The XTECH pad boasts significant improvements in arch and foam body design, as well as a revolutionary double-cantilevered system which provides players with the look and feel of a flat pad.
